Steve Menzies announced as Ambassador for iconic ‘Pub2Pub’ Fun Run

On Sunday, August 26, iconic northern beaches community event the Pub2Pub Charity Fun Run & Festival celebrates its 26th year and local sporting legend Steve Menzies has accepted an invitation to become the event’s new Ambassador in 2018.
Steve is of course one of the greatest players ever to wear the maroon and white of the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. The 180 tries he scored for Manly remains the third highest total ever in the history of Australian first grade rugby league, behind only former North Sydney and Manly winger Ken Irvine’s 212 tries and current Melbourne Storm great, Billy Slater. Of course, it must be remembered that Steve played the bulk of his career in the forwards!
In total Steve, (or ‘Beaver’ as he was universally known) played 510 first grade, State of Origin and Test Matches, scoring an incredible 251 tries. When invited to be part of the 2018 Pub2Pub he said: “I always wanted to run in this great event, but it was always held ‘in season’ when I played for Manly… and then I went overseas to finish my career.
“Now I’m back and am thrilled to have been asked to be an ambassador for the largest annual community event held on the northern beaches… an event that has raised some 3.5 million dollars since inception for wonderful local charities including Surf Lifesaving Northern Beaches, Without A Ribbon, Life Education Australia, Bear Cottage, Manly and Mona Vale Hospitals and many more.”
Organised by Rotary of Brookvale, registrations are now open for this year’s big event and Early Bird discounts, Family Packages and lower prices for Juniors are all available. Prizes will also be awarded for the first 200 to enter during the Early Bird period.
Participants can register as individuals, families or Teams in the traditional 13km event from Dee Why Beach to Newport Beach, or in either of the short-course options (6km from Warriewood or 3km from Mona Vale). And for the first time ever, this year ‘Virtual Runners’ can join Teams… i.e. people who aren’t able to actually participate on the day but still want to support their favourite charity. They pay half the entry fee and they count as 0.5 of a participant when Team numbers are tallied for the additional cash prizes on offer thanks to sponsors.
A real festival atmosphere will prevail at the Finish Line with a big stage dedicated to Live Music organised by Merivale, International Food stalls, drinks available at the 4 Pines licensed Bar, activities for kids and of course, the Presentation Ceremony.
Organisers are hoping that at least 5,000 runners will take part in the 26th running of the Pub2Pub. As Steve Menzies said this week: “Everybody’s welcome in the Pub2Pub… friends, family and work mates… we’re all invited to have a fun day out. The more participants we get, the more fun is had and the more money is raised for charity. So please, get involved.”
